Chillies are so good for you. Did you know that if you had a little chilli sauce each day it helps reduce insulin spikes after meals- so great for diabetics. Plus it acts as a pain reliever. Team it up with health-giving garlic, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon- which have great effect on your digestive system, fat metabolism and anti-inflammatory properties- and you have a tasty and healthy sauce. And it is so simple to make.

Simple Healthy Tasty Chilli Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 2cm piece ginger, sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves sliced
  • 2 cm piece fresh turmeric, peeled and sliced (or use 2 teaspoons powdered turmeric)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon cloves
  • finely grated zest of 2 lemons
  • 2 teaspoons black peppercorns
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 200gm red chillies, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 sprig thyme
  • 200ml cider vinegar

Method

Pack all of the ingredients (except vinegar) as tightly as possible into your sterilized jar and then fill it to the top with the vinegar. Seal the jar and leave it to infuse in a cool dark place for one week.

After a week tip everything into a food processor, or a bowl with a stick blender and blitz it until it is smooth.

Transfer to a sealable bottle or jar and keep in the fridge for up to a year.
